Depending on what kind of procedure you need, you may have to take a sedative. Contrary to common belief, this does not always mean you will need to be asleep. While some procedures do require you to be fully unconscious, most require only a mild to moderate sedative to reach appropriate levels of sedation.
Our office at Q Dental offers different kinds of sedation depending on the level of sedation required and the length of the procedure. Explore what treatments we have to offer in sedation dentistry.
Usually, sedatives are used when a patient must undergo a procedure that would be more bearable in a relaxed state of consciousness. Sedatives could be necessary during a dental implant operation or to ease anxiety during a simple dental procedure.
Some patients are so anxiety-ridden at the idea of even simple procedures that a mild sedative may be necessary to calm nerves. Speak to your dentist if you have anxiety related to dental procedures.
In instances where a mild to moderate level of sedation is desired, oral sedation may be a good option. Oral sedation involves swallowing a pill around an hour before the procedure. The pill should leave you drowsy, but still in an awakened state, although some patients do fall asleep.
If higher levels of sedation are necessary, we may give you a higher dosage pill. Your dentist will inform you if you need to be escorted to and from the office, but with any level of sedation this is usually a requirement. The safe and effective oral sedation we offer at Q Dental will calm the anxiety surrounding any dental procedure and give you a relaxing dental experience.
Q Dental is ready to help treat your Oral Sedation and any other needs in Sedation Dentistry. Feel free to give us a call at (217)352-4646 or Schedule an Appointment online.
Administered through a needle, intravenous (IV) sedation allows the dentist to continuously control the level and amount of sedative given to the patient. IV sedation is generally used in more invasive procedures, as it essentially puts the patient to sleep. It is also introduced into the system faster because of its intravenous entry into the body, meaning the dentist can get to work right away.
IV sedation is commonly used in complex root canals, tooth extractions, and implant placement. However, it can also be used in cases of anxiety or for patients unable to swallow pills. Under IV sedation, you will have little to no recollection of the experience or any associated sights, sounds, or smells. This makes it easy for us to complete multiple procedures in one office visit, cutting down on time and cost.
We believe in working with our patients to determine the appropriate sedation technique for each individual. Dosage amounts are also individualized and based on a variety of factors, including any medications you may be taking.
No matter what procedure you have to undergo, you are in safe hands with Q Dental. We adhere to the legal standards of sedation dentistry, and go above and beyond to ensure our patients have a comfortable and safe experience. If you must take a sedative, the dentist will tell you which kind, and what the expected effects and duration will be.
